The Gion House Lower Level

Accommodates: 4 ● Bedrooms: 2 ● Bathrooms: 1

Location: 563-12 Komatsu-cho 1F, Higashiyama Ward, Kyoto, 605-0811, Japan

DESCRIPTION:

Renovated in early 2023, The Gion House Lower Level is the entire ground floor of historic two-storey machiya on a quiet side street in the heart of Gion. With its own entrance, it is completely independent from the Gion House Upper Level. It’s perfect for up to four persons. Alternatively, the entire house can be rented for up to eight persons.

There are side-by-side bedrooms, separated by heavy sliding wooden doors. Sleeping is either on a comfortable Western-style bed, or on a double futon placed on tatami mats in the Japanese-style bedroom. The sofa in the living room converts to a sofabed when needed. Underfloor radiant heating keeps the place warm and toasty in the Winter, and air conditioning units in each room ensure cool comfort in the Summer.

The ambiance is captivating yet cozy, exuding a modern Japanese aesthetic. Original Japanese architectural details are complimented by antique lighting fixtures and woodwork throughout, and by a thoughtful curation of antique Japanese and Scandinavian furniture, mixed with modern hand-crafted furniture by Japanese artisans. Beautiful handcrafted “washi” (Japanese paper) is used on ceilings and sliding doors. The exceptional design feature of this unit is the high-end, custom-built bath and shower area, which is made of stone. The oversized bath tub large enough for three persons. There is a private “tsuboniwa” inner garden, which can be viewed from the living room or the bath tub. The kitchen is fully stocked with everything one could need to prepare simple meals.

According to neighborhood sources, before it was converted into a residence, The Gion House was an "ochaya," or a traditional establishment where the patrons of Gion were entertained by geisha in a very exclusive setting. The house is over 100 years old, and despite being meticulously renovated with the comforts of Western visitors in mind, it retains many of its original architectural features. The location is superb in terms of being central and being steeped in atmosphere. This property is located within the very heart of the historic Gion district. The location is completely quiet, since it is tucked on a side street with almost no through car traffic. There are numerous temples, restaurants, and shops located nearby, with walking access to major tourist sights such as Kiyomizu Temple, Chion-in, and Maruyama Park. The downtown shopping district and Kamo River are also just a ten minute walk away. Nearby is easy access to public transportation and taxis. The Gion House is just five minutes' walk from Hanamikoji Street, one of the most traditional and preserved sections of Kyoto, where you can find old "machiya" style wooden houses in abundance. You can also find geishas scurrying down the alleyways on their way to work in the evenings. Our property borders the expansive grounds of the Kenninji Temple, Kyoto's oldest Zen temple. Our other properties Amber House Gion and Indigo House Gion, as well as our office, are all within 50 meters distance. Our friendly and attentive English-speaking staff is nearby to help with any needs you may have during your stay.

The house was been the subject of attention by international media and the film industry. It was recently used as a location for an upcoming American TV series being released in later 2023. It has been featured on HGTV, CNN, and FT (Financial Times,) as well as in several architecture-interior related magazines. The Gion House was selected by Lonely Planet Japan's author Chris Rowthorn as the 'Best Vacation Rental in Kyoto.' Indigo House Gion Lower Level

Accommodates: 4 ● Bedrooms: 2 ● Bathrooms: 1

Location: 563-22 Komatsucho 1F, Higashiyama Ward, Kyoto, 605-0811, Japan

DESCRIPTION:

Indigo House Gion is two level “machiya” style traditional townhouse, which we transformed from its abandoned and dilapidated condition into an architectural showplace just a few years ago. This “machiya” was built in the early 1900s, and was formerly used as an “ochaya,” a teahouse where geisha entertained elite clientele.

It is located just a few steps from The Gion House and Amber House Gion, on a quiet cul-de-sac street in Gion, with no through traffic. The Gion neighborhood is known for its long history as Japan’s most important geisha district, where you can still find streets lined with the historic buildings for which Kyoto is known. And there is so much to see and do within walking distance. The heart of downtown is just a ten minute walk away. Our friendly and attentive English-speaking staff is at our nearby office daily to help with any needs you may have during your stay.

Indigo House Gion Lower Level is the full lower level of the house, with its own entrance. It’s completely independent from the Upper Level. There is enough room to accommodate two to three adults, or a couple with two children (please note: minimum age for children is 7.)

The two bedrooms are both in traditional tatami mat style, and retain some very distinctive original design details such as “tokonoma” alcoves, woven “ajiro” wood detailing on the ceilings, and bamboo molding. The larger master bedroom has a high quality bed with extra-wide double mattress, while the very compact second bedroom has traditional-style sleeping on a soft double-sized futon.

When entering the Lower Level, you can’t help but to be impressed by the interior garden, surrounded by huge walls of glass. The feeling is very modern, however, the focal point of the garden is a very old and crumbling Edo-period stone lantern.

The bath area has the luxury of space. It features an extra wide shower head, with full-sized bath tub. Of course, the toilet has those high-tech functions. And of course, there is a washer/dryer for guest use.

There is radiant floor heating to keep guests warm in the winter, and of course, air conditioning assures that the place stays cool in the warm season.

What is distinctive about Indigo House Gion? It’s bright and airy, since there are walls of glass surrounding the interior garden, which extends from the Lower Level to the Upper Level. The master bedroom has an expansive south-facing view of the inner area of Kenninji Temple, where you can see the monk’s cemetery and vegetable gardens, as well as the buildings where the monks live. There’s a lot of blue sky and green trees, and natural light. You can hear the sound of monks chanting their prayers early in the morning. You can also hear the enchanting sounds of crickets, cicadas, and nightingales, depending on the season.

Indigo House Gion was filmed by CNN for a the program called "On the Road," in a program called "Saving Kyoto's Beautiful Homes," which can still be found on Youtube. The opening segment shows Indigo House as we found it, before renovation.

There are two tatami-matted bedrooms, one with a premium quality double bed, and the other with sleeping on comfortable futons (either one futon, or two futons placed side-by-side.) The living room with Italian leather sofa has its own inner garden, enclosed by large plate glass windows. The spacious kitchen area is fully equipped, and has a dining table with four chairs. Whenever possible, natural and locally sourced materials have been used, and synthetic materials avoided. Many elements have been made by hand in Kyoto by local artisans.

The Old Modern - Circle Suite

    Accommodates: 2 ● Bedrooms: 1 ● Bathrooms: 1

Location: 332 Shimoatarashi machi, Higashiyama Ward, Kyoto, 605-0914, Japan

    DESCRIPTION:

The Old Modern - Circle Suite is a luxurious one-bedroom suite, suitable for a single or a couple. It exudes an old-world charm, with it's Art Deco wallpaper, chandelier of marble and brass, and high ceiling with wooden beams. There is a comfortable queen-sized bed, small table with chairs, and closet. The Circle Suite occupies the lower level of the front building. Amenities include mini refrigerator, microwave oven, electric kettle, television, high-speed wifi internet, washer/dryer, iphone, high-end pillows and goose-down comforters.

The Old Modern was built in 1928 by a prominent Kyoto architect as a residence for his family. It was meticulously maintained throughout the years, and the building underwent a complete high-end restoration in 2018. It is an architectural treasure, and a rare example of a "machiya" townhouse which is an eclectic blend of traditional Japanese structure with some very early "modern" Western details such as a fireplace, high beamed ceilings, and parquet flooring. It is an important part of Kyoto’s architectural legacy, and has been designated by the City of Kyoto as an important cultural asset.

The Old Modern consists of two separate two-storey buildings, with two exquisite gardens. There are four luxurious full-floor suites, each with en-suite bath/toilet.

The location in the Southern Higashiyama district can't be beat...it's only a few minutes walk to Gion, Kyoto National Museum, Kiyomizu Temple, as well as many other sights. It's just 15 minutes' walk to the bustling downtown commercial district. The Four Seasons and Hyatt Regency are close by. Kyoto Station is a short taxi or bus ride away, and there are numerous public transportation options nearby. There are also plenty of places to eat and shop in the immediate neighborhood.  We provide a customized map of the area, with dozens of restaurant recommendations. And we are happy to help with reservations.

The Library is a common space where all guests are welcome to relax and enjoy our large collection of books on Japan, and Japanese art and design. The Library is bright and airy, and a huge plate-glass window overlooks the "nakaniwa" interior garden.

The Deco Suite occupies the upper level of the front building. Radiant (floor) heating ensures that the suite is kept pleasantly warm in the Winter, and air-conditioning keeps it cool in the warmer months.

The building has been designated by the City of Kyoto as an important cultural asset.

The Old Modern consists of two separate two-storey buildings, with two exquisite gardens. There are four luxurious full-floor suites, each with en-suite bath/toilet. All of our suites have these features: mini refrigerator, microwave oven, electric kettle, television, high-speed wifi internet, washer/dryer, iphone, and high-end pillows with goose-down comforters. Also provided in each suite is a Nespresso coffee/espresso maker with a selection of coffee capsules, as well as an assortment of teas.

The Old Modern - Garden Suite

    Accommodates: 4 ● Bedrooms: 1 ● Bathrooms: 1

Location: 332 Shimoatarashi machi, Higashiyama Ward, Kyoto, 605-0914, Japan

    DESCRIPTION:

Old Modern - Garden Suite occupies the lower level of the rear building. This suite retains a subdued elegance which is typical of traditional Japanese architecture. Garden suite opens up to the expansive rear garden, whose centerpiece is a magnificent pine tree which towers high above. Sleeping is on a queen bed in the room adjacent to the rear garden. The sofa in the other room transforms into a sofabed. Although maximum capacity is four persons, we recommend this unit for a couple or a family with older children, due to the limited amount of space when the sofabed is in use. *Please note, minimum age for children is 7.
